The makers of ‘Dorothy’, Karthik Subbaraj’s upcoming film, have released the movie’s first single, ‘Kalyana Virundhu’. The song features music and lyrics by veteran composer Ilaiyaraaja. Karthik Subbaraj, who has often spoken about his admiration for the legendary musician, described working with him as a long-standing dream that had finally come true.
‘Kalyana Virundhu’ carries the flavour of Ilaiyaraaja’s music from the 1980s and later decades, with an energetic arrangement that the makers have promoted as a special musical moment.
Director Venkat Prabhu also reacted to the release, praising Karthik Subbaraj for bringing Ilaiyaraaja’s music back to the forefront and predicting that the song would create a nostalgic experience in theatres.
‘Dorothy’ features Keerthy Suresh, Sananth and Rishikanth in the lead roles. The story revolves around Karthi and Subbu, two lifelong friends raised in a harsh village environment in Tamil Nadu. Their lives take a dramatic turn when Dorothy, played by Keerthy Suresh, encounters a difficult situation.
According to the film’s Toronto International Film Festival description, the story explores survival in a setting marked by patriarchal structures and everyday violence. The film is also said to draw inspiration from Bruce Lee’s action style and the physical comedy associated with filmmaker Howard Hawks.
The film is produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain under Sikhya Entertainment and Dhammam Films. Sikhya Entertainment is also presenting the film along with Jio Studios.
The technical crew includes cinematographer S Thirunavukkarasu, editor Ganesh Siva, stunt director Dinesh Subbarayan and costume designer Praveen Raja. ‘Dorothy’ is scheduled to have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and is set to release worldwide in theatres on September 25.
