‘Sarpatta Parambarai’ starring Arya and directed by Ranjith has become a huge hit among fans. Even after two weeks after the release of the movie, it is still the talk of the town.

Sports movies have always interested Tamil audiences. Let us take a look at some of the movies made in Kollywood with focus on boxing..

Badri

Badri (Vijay) is a happy-go-lucky youth who spends his days roaming around with his friends. His older brother Vetri, who is a college-level kickboxer and Viswanathan’s favourite son, on the other hand, dotes on him.

Meanwhile, Vetri is attacked and seriously injured by his kickboxing arch-rival Rohit thus ruling him out for the final match of the inter-collegiate kickboxing championship against Rohit. Badri decides to fight for Vetri by taking his place in the final and trains hard for it. He defeats Rohit in the final, thus winning the kickboxing championship.

M Kumaran, S/O Mahalakshmi

Kumaran (Jayam Ravi) grows by the care of his mother, Mahalakshmi(Nadiya), who is left out by her husband Prakash Raj, who is a kick boxer.
Kumaran is also trained to be a kick boxer by his mother. Meanwhile, he also falls in love with his darling Malabar (Asin). A very friendly relationship prevails between Kumaran and Mahalakshmi. She encourages him to be national champion in kickboxing. One day she dies of a heart attack.

Before her death, she reveals to her son about his father. Kumaran goes to Malaysia in search of his father and teaches him a lesson, only to find him already acquainted with his own family. Kumaran changes his mind and joins in his father’s kick boxing training concern. There he finds his father in trouble with his old student. The tussle, which takes place after that is the rest of the story.

Irudhi Suttru

Prabhu (Madhavan), a hot headed national boxing coach who as punishment for not bowing to the higher authorities is sent to Chennai with a challenge to discover and train a woman boxer for the National Championship.

Prabhu lands in the North Chennai region where Nassar is the bungling trainer pinning his hopes on his student Lux. Madhee is Lux’s sister who sells stolen fish and has a spirit like a wild horse.

Prabhu sees a world level boxer in Madhee who is totally not interested but agrees to train for the bribe of Rs.500 a day the coach offers.  The rest of the story is about whether the failed coach succeeds in training a mere fisherwoman into a world champion.

Maan karate

Five friends meet a mystic in a forest who grants their wish — a newspaper from the future. They decide to get rich by using their knowledge of the future.

So, they decide to focus on Peter (Sivakarthikeyan), who is supposed to win a boxing tournament with a prize money of Rs 2 crore. But Peter hardly knows a thing about boxing and tries to use these friends to succeed in his love.

And then the interval twist arrives — there is another Peter, who is taking part in the tournament, who is a feared boxer and is an odds-on favourite. Which Peter wins forms the rest of the story.

Bhooloham

‘Bhooloham’ is set in north Madras and revolves around the boxing community in the place. There are two warring boxing groups in the locality and Deepak Shah, a media mogul, hits upon the idea of holding a boxing championship by exploiting their rivalry.

With his smooth operator ways, he has no difficulty in getting Bhooloham (Jayam Ravi), a boxer seeking to avenge the loss of his late father in the ring, fight against Arumugam, whose father had defeated the former’s father in the tournament.

The hot-headed Bhooloham puts Arumugam in a critical condition by knocking him out in their match, but has a moment of epiphany and decides to hang up his gloves for good. But Deepak, who is counting on the tournament to bring untold riches to the channel, will not let him withdraw that easily.

He stages a match between Bhooloham and the national champion Guru Dayal by deceit and forces Bhooloham to take on Steven George, a notorious international champion, in the final match. What happens next forms the crux of the story.
