Karthik Subbaraj’s ‘Dorothy’ has made an impressive international debut, receiving a standing ovation after its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival.
The Tamil film was screened in TIFF’s Centrepiece section, giving the project a major international platform ahead of its theatrical release. Karthik Subbaraj attended the premiere along with actors Keerthy Suresh, Sananth and Rishikanth and producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain.
The response from the Toronto audience has added to expectations around the film, which marks Subbaraj’s 10th directorial venture.
Set against a rural Tamil Nadu backdrop, the film explores human relationships and social realities through the lives of its central characters. Its themes include friendship, identity, caste, masculinity and compassion, giving the project a more grounded dramatic tone.
One of the major attractions surrounding ‘Dorothy’ is the music of legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja. The collaboration marks the first time Subbaraj and Ilaiyaraaja have worked together on a feature film.
The film’s music had already been showcased in Chennai through a live presentation, with musicians performing its soundtrack as a continuous musical experience.
The TIFF screening also marks an important moment for Tamil cinema, with ‘Dorothy’ being described as the first Tamil feature to premiere at the festival in a decade.
Produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain, the film is backed by Jio Studios, Sikhya Entertainment and Dhammam Films. ‘Dorothy’ is scheduled to arrive in theatres worldwide on September 25, 2026.
