Actor Dhanush has shared his thoughts on the debate surrounding his National Film Award for ‘Raayan’, saying he understands why some viewers believe other films released during the same period deserved greater recognition.
The discussion gained momentum after the National Film Awards were announced, with many film enthusiasts expressing disappointment that critically acclaimed films such as ‘Meiyazhagan’ and ‘Maharaja’ did not receive more honours.
Addressing the criticism, Dhanush acknowledged the quality of several films released last year and said every audience member is entitled to their own opinion. At the same time, he recalled that a number of performances from his own career, including those in ‘Pudhupettai’, ‘Maryan’, ‘Karnan’, ‘Vada Chennai’ and the Hindi film ‘Raanjhanaa’, were also widely appreciated but did not receive National Awards.
He noted that while many people are now questioning his latest award, there was comparatively little public discussion when those earlier performances went unrecognized. According to the actor, awards are only one form of appreciation, and an artist’s work ultimately lives on through the audience’s acceptance over time.
The debate has once again highlighted the subjective nature of film awards, with viewers continuing to champion different performances based on their personal preferences.
