Tale of pride and tradition

“Jockey”

– Review

Set in the rustic landscapes of Madurai, ‘Jockey’ follows the lives of two brothers, Akash (Yuvan Krishna) and Madhu (Ridhaan Krishnas).

The story centers on the competitive and often dangerous world of “Goat Fighting”—a sport where the pride of a village and the ego of the owners are at stake.

When a local kingpin (played by Madhu Sudhan Rao) challenges the brothers’ family legacy, they must train their prized goat, Kali, for a high-stakes battle.

The narrative balances the adrenaline of the sport with a grounded emotional core involving their family and Akash’s budding romance with a village girl (played by Ammu Abhirami).

Dr. Pragabhal, who spent nearly three years researching this subject, brings a documentary-like authenticity to the screen.

His execution is raw and gritty, avoiding the “cinematic gloss” usually seen in rural dramas.

He succeeds in making the audience care about the animal as much as the human characters.

The film relies heavily on the physical and emotional commitment of its lead cast.

The lead duo of Yuvan Krishna & Ridhaan Krishnas deliver powerful, physically demanding performances.

Their chemistry as brothers is believable, and their visible “real-life” bond with the goats adds a layer of sincerity.

Ammu Abhirami as the female lead, she brings a soft but firm presence to the story, acting as the emotional anchor for the brothers.

Madhu Sudhan Rao plays a formidable antagonist, bringing a chilling authority to his role without slipping into typical “villain” clichés.

The supporting cast like Saranya Ravichandran and KPY Yogi provide solid support, with Yogi offering much-needed comic relief in an otherwise intense narrative.

Cinematographer N.S. Uthayakumar uses a warm, dusty palette that captures the heat and intensity of Madurai.

Sakthi Balaji’s background score is heavy on folk-percussion, which perfectly complements the “rush” of the fighting pits.

Rest of the technical aspects of the movie gels well with the theme of the movie.
