As the country celebrated National Handloom Day on Friday (August 7), actor-producer Kamal Haasan requested people to support weavers by buying handloom products.
Stating that weavers and artisans in the handloom industry are important for the rural economy, the Makkal Needhi Maiam founder-president said people should buy handloom products whenever they can and support them.
In a Tamil tweet, he said, “கைத்தறிகள் நம் கிராமப் பொருளாதாரத்தின் பெரும் தூண். கைகளில் வண்ணம் செய்யும் அவர்களைக் கைவிடாது காத்தல் நம் கடமை மட்டுமல்ல, நம் பெருமையும் கூட. வாய்ப்பு கிடைக்கும் போதெல்லாம் கைத்தறி பொருட்களை பயன்படுத்துதல் தான் அக்கலை காக்கப்பட,இந்த தேசிய கைத்தறி தினத்தில் நம் கடமை. நாமே தீர்வு.”
At present, Kamal is working on ‘Indian 2’ directed by Shankar. A couple of days ago, Kamal, Shankar and Lyca Productions gave financial aid to the families of those who died on the sets of ‘Indian 2’ in a crane mishap.
Speaking at the event, Kamal said, “Actors and directors are emotional people, they would financially help the affected technicians but we should appreciate the producers who have come forward offer a huge help”.
