Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin was detained by police on Tuesday in connection with a case registered over remarks he allegedly made during a recent public gathering. The action came after complaints were filed claiming that parts of his speech were objectionable and warranted legal action.
Police officials said the case was registered following the receipt of complaints and a preliminary examination of the allegations. After completing the required legal procedures, officers took Udhayanidhi Stalin into custody for further investigation.
The detention sparked protests from supporters of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), who gathered at various locations in Chennai and other districts. Police deployed additional personnel to maintain law and order, and several demonstrators were reportedly removed from protest sites.
Representatives of the DMK criticized the police action, describing it as politically motivated. Leaders from other parties, however, maintained that the law should take its course and that the allegations deserved investigation through the legal process.
Meanwhile, Udhayanidhi Stalin’s legal team has initiated steps to challenge the police action and seek appropriate relief before the courts. The matter is expected to be heard as judicial proceedings continue.
