Ahead of its theatrical release on May 8, filmmaker Rathna Kumar’s raw youth drama ’29’ has officially locked its digital partner.

Netflix has acquired the streaming rights for the film, starring Vidhu and Preethi Asrani, in a deal that reflects high industry confidence in the project’s content.

The film is expected to premiere on the platform approximately four to six weeks after its cinema run, continuing Netflix’s strategy of backing edgy, realistic Tamil narratives.

The deal is rumored to be one of the highest for a non-star-led Tamil film this year, largely due to Rathna Kumar’s growing reputation as a hit-maker.

Marketing for the film is set to shift gears next week, with the trailer expected to drop on the same day the census for the 2026 elections is announced.

Pre-release screenings for critics are already being planned, with the director expressing confidence that the “Strong content” will resonate with both local and global audiences.
