Madurai is one of the favourite cities for filmmakers to have a backdrop for their films. Recently, the Madurai backdrop was used in Karthik Subbaraj Directorial ‘Jigarthanda Double X’. The first part of the movie was also set in Madurai.
There are a few iconic movies such as ‘Ghilli’, ‘Subramaniapuram’, ‘Karagattakaaran’ and ‘Devar Magan’ which are made with the Madurai backdrop.

Vijay Sethupathi plays a role of a doctor, who goes back to his village after college, to serve his people in this film. Interestingly, the first half of the film is set in Madurai, as he pursues his graduation in Madurai Medical College. The film also portrays his relationship with his brothers, and how he strives hard to survive as a good human being.

Sivakarthikeyan is an unemployed youngster from Madurai whose dream is to get married to his childhood sweetheart, Keerthy Suresh. The film is a complete family entertainer and revolves around his relationship with his grandfather, Rajkiran. The climax fight of the film was shot near Madurai Anaipatti Dam, and it’s one of the highpoints of the film.

The film starts off with a Madurai-based inspector, Sethupathi, investigating a murder of a cop. Later, he finds out that Vaathiyar, a big shot in Madurai, is responsible for the murder. He even arrests him, but then, his career goes into a tailspin. The film portrays the lifestyle of the city, the cops and the small-time gundas there in a realistic way.
Paandiya Naadu:

Vishal is a youngster who owns a mobile sales and service centre in the heart of Madurai city. He falls in love with a school teacher, Lakshmi Menon. Unfortunately, Vishal’s brother gets trapped in a political skirmish, and is murdered by a gangster. Sivakumar and his father Bharathirajaa plan to take revenge but in their own separate ways.
Aadukalam:

This award-winning film revolves around the practise of rooster fights in the suburbs of Madurai city. The film talks about the ban of rooster fights, the culture and lifestyle of Maduraiites, and how the game is very close to their hearts. Dhanush is a youngster who is an expert in training roosters for fights. The film is a revenge drama, and how the hero’s own guru takes him on because of the latter’s ego, is the basic crux of the film.
