Legendary producer AVM Saravanan passes away at 86

The South Indian film industry is deeply saddened by the loss of veteran producer M. Saravanan, the esteemed steward and patriarch of the iconic AVM Productions studio, who passed away in Chennai this morning at the age of 86.
The passing of M. Saravanan, popularly known as AVM Saravanan, was confirmed by family sources, who stated that the death occurred due to age-related health issues and complications.
As the son of the studio’s founder, A. V. Meiyappan, Saravanan commenced his work in 1958 and formally assumed the leadership role in 1979, becoming the custodian of the historic AVM Studios in Chennai.
His tenure was marked by an unwavering commitment to quality filmmaking across five decades, resulting in over 300 films across five languages, including pivotal Tamil classics and blockbusters that launched or cemented the careers of superstars from MGR and Sivaji Ganesan to Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan.
His production credits, which include National Film Award-winning films and two Filmfare Awards South wins for Best Film (Tamil), underscore his profound impact on the industry.
Furthermore, his respected stature was acknowledged outside of cinema when he served as the Sheriff of Madras in 1986. He leaves behind a rich cinematic heritage, which is now carried forward by his son and producer, M. S. Guhan.
