Kamal Haasan has completed 67 years in cinema and used the milestone to reflect on his extraordinary journey, the lessons he has gathered and the long history of filmmaking itself.
The veteran actor thanked audiences for their wishes in a social media post and took a notably modest view of his career. He said he considers only around 20 years of his 67-year journey to have been a period of genuine learning, while describing much of the remaining time as simply moving along with circumstances.
Kamal compared his journey in cinema to water flowing through a river before eventually reaching the sea. For him, that sea represents cinema as a collective experience shared by filmmakers, performers and audiences.
He also reflected on just how unusual the length of his career is. Cinema has been around since the Lumière brothers presented their first public screening in December 1895. Kamal pointed out that he has been part of the industry for more than half of its entire history.
Despite the remarkable statistic, the actor suggested that experience alone does not mean the learning process is complete. He expressed hope that the knowledge he has gained can still be refined and put to better use as he continues his association with filmmaking.
Kamal began his acting career as a child artist in ‘Kalathur Kannamma’ in 1960 and received the President’s Gold Medal for his performance.
His most recent film was ‘Thug Life’, released in 2025. He currently has several projects in the pipeline, including collaborations with directors Anbariv and Nelson. The latter project is expected to feature Rajinikanth as well. The actor signed off his reflection on his decades-long career with characteristic humour, calling himself possibly the oldest member of Gen Z.
