   Maaran

Review

Dhanush plays the role of Mathimaaran, an honest reporter. He exposes the wrongdoings and corruption of politicians in public.
He makes a big revelation about Former Minister Samuthirakani. Following this Samuthirakani plots to kill Maaran. During this conflict, Dhanush’s sister Smruthi Venkat is murdered.
Dhanush feels that Samuthirakani is behind his sister’s death, but does not have enough evidence to pin it against him. So he starts his own investigation.  What happens next forms the rest of the story.
Director Karthik Naren has taken up a wafer-thin plot and walked a tightrope.
There is the mandatory twist in the plot which is revealed in the climax, but by the time things become cliched. Dhanush looks stylish and this role is a cakewalk for him.
He is energetic in the first half and intense in the second. Smruthi Venkat gets an important role and has grabbed it with both hands.
Malavikka Mohanan has ample scope to perform and does justice to her character.
Samuthirakani as the antagonist is okay. Music by GV Prakash is average. Editing by GK Prasanna could have been crisp.

Rating: 3.5/5.
