A gritty rural hustle

“Kombu Seevi”

-Movie Review

The story follows Rokkapuli (Sarathkumar) and his nephew Pandi (Shanmuga Pandian). Having lost their ancestral lands and traditional livelihoods, the duo is driven by a desperate, misplaced ambition: to become millionaires.
The narrative explores the bond between this uncle and nephew as they navigate a dangerous criminal underworld.
What begins as a quest for financial survival quickly spirals into a cycle of violence and rural politics, testing their loyalty to each other and their village.
Director Ponram has successfully reinvented his style in this movie. While his trademark rural humor is present in the first half, the second half takes a sharp turn into a gritty crime thriller.
He balances the “mass” elements required for a commercial entertainer with a grounded, realistic portrayal of 90s rural life.
This is undoubtedly Shanmuga Pandian’s best performance to date. He has shed his initial inhibitions, displaying a commanding screen presence and delivering punchy dialogues with the “Young Captain” spark that fans of his father, the late Vijayakanth, have been waiting for.
Sarathkumar is the backbone of the film. His chemistry with Shanmuga Pandian feels authentic, and his experience brings gravitas to the emotional sequences.
Tharnika makes a confident debut, serving as more than just a romantic interest. Munishkanth and Kaali Venkat provide the much-needed comic relief, though their roles are smaller compared to previous Ponram films.
Yuvan Shankar Raja is the unsung hero of Kombu Seevi. His background score—featuring rustic, heavy percussion—elevates the action sequences and perfectly captures the 90s era.
Balasubramaniem utilizes a warm, sepia-toned palette to recreate the arid Usilampatti landscape, making the environment feel like a character in itself. Rest of the technical cast of the movie help in taking the plot further.
