Movie Review

‘Aatti’ is an ambitious period thriller that attempts to blend mystery, folklore, feminism, and social justice into a single narrative. Set in a remote hill village in the 1970s, the story begins when a newly appointed police inspector investigates the murder of a young schoolteacher. As the inquiry unfolds, he discovers a long-standing tradition in which a masked group punishes men who commit crimes against women. The premise is intriguing and offers the potential for a gripping rural mystery.

Director L. Kittu deserves credit for choosing an unconventional subject rooted in female empowerment and indigenous traditions. The title ‘Aatti’ is explained as symbolising a female deity, a women-led social order, and a women’s fighting force.

The film attempts to connect the present-day mystery with historical legends, clan traditions, and the idea of women as protectors of justice. However, the review notes that these multiple layers are not woven together coherently, leaving the audience struggling to understand both the title and the story’s central message.

The film creates an atmospheric setting with its misty hill landscapes, isolated village, and old-world backdrop free from modern distractions. While the mystery is initially engaging, the screenplay takes too long to reach key revelations.

Performance-wise, the film delivers mixed results. Isakki Karvannan, who plays the police inspector, is given a central role. Abi Nakshathra receives considerable buildup, creating expectations of a major twist. Praveen Palanisamy, despite limited screen time as the murdered teacher, leaves a better impression, while the late Selvakumar provides some memorable moments. The music by Theeson and cinematography by Sibi Sadasivam are considered adequate.

Ultimately, ‘Aatti’ is a film with a worthy them. Its core idea—that women have historically organised to protect themselves and punish abusers—has emotional and social relevance.
