S. Janaki dies at 88, bringing down the curtain on an unparalleled musical era

Legendary playback singer S. Janaki, whose voice became synonymous with Indian cinema across generations, passed away at the age of 88, marking the end of one of the most illustrious careers in the history of playback singing.
Born in Andhra Pradesh, Janaki began her musical journey in the late 1950s, making her Tamil playback debut with ‘Vidhiyin Vilayattu’ (1957). Over a career spanning nearly seven decades, she recorded more than 40,000 songs in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, and several other Indian languages, earning admiration for her extraordinary versatility and emotional depth.
Revered as the “Isai Arasi” and often hailed as the “Nightingale of South India,” Janaki possessed a rare ability to adapt her voice to every emotion and every character on screen. From haunting melodies and romantic duets to devotional songs and folk numbers, her performances became an integral part of India’s musical heritage.
She collaborated with the biggest names in Indian film music, including Ilaiyaraaja, M. S. Viswanathan, K. V. Mahadevan, A. R. Rahman, and S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, producing countless evergreen songs that continue to captivate listeners.
Janaki’s unparalleled contribution to Indian music was recognised with four National Film Awards for Best Female Playback Singer and 33 state film awards, making her one of the most honoured playback singers in the country.
She passed away at her residence in Mysuru following age-related health complications.
Though S. Janaki is no longer with us, her voice will continue to echo through generations, preserving a legacy that transcends languages, borders, and time. Her songs remain not just a part of cinema, but a part of the lives and memories of millions.
