Vijay Sethupathi’s upcoming flick ‘Kadaisi Vivasayi’ is all set to release on 11 February. As the title suggests, the movie is based on the life of a farmer. The topic of farming is not new to Tamil cinema. Let us take a look at some of the most popular movies based on farming.

Bhoomi:

The movie directed by Lakshman has Jayam Ravi playing the lead role. The core theme of the movie is about how a scientist turns into a organic farmer to save his village which is affected by a corporate company

Kaththi:

Directed by AR Murugadoss, the movie has Vijay in dual roles. One character named Jeevanandham tracks the water source to enrich farming in his village, only to later find that a corporate company is planning to steal the resource. Was he able to revive farming in his village forms the rest of the story.

Kaappan:

Suriya comes as a Special Protection Group in this movie directed by K V Anand. He is also a organic farmer who is on a mission to save the agriculturally rich delta region from the attack of highly dangerous locusts. These locusts are orchestrated by a businessman as the farmers do not give up their land for his mining company.

Vellai Yaanai:

Samuthirakani plays a farmer in this movie directed by Subramaniya Siva. Farmers from a village near Thanjavur get loan from banks to do farming. However, due to the lack of rainfall it becomes difficult to do agriculture following which the farmers are not able to repay their debt. The men in the village decide to leave for some other place to do some work to repay the debt. What happens next forms the rest of the story.

Kadaikutty Singam:

The movie directed by Pandiraj is about a young farmer and his large family. Karthi travels on a bike which has ‘Vivasayee’ written on the nameplate. From the hero stopping a bus which refused to take in an old woman with a huge sack of produce, to him speaking about the glories of farming at a college, there are several ‘mass’ scenes. Kadaikutty Singam is among the few films which haven’t portrayed farmers as people who are suffering.
