The theatrical release of Karthi’s ‘Vaa Vaathiyar’ remains blocked following a Madras High Court order regarding a decade-long financial dispute between Studio Green and an Official Assignee.
Producer K.E. Gnanavel Raja is required to settle outstanding dues amounting to Rs 21.78 crore to the estate of late financier Arjunlal Sundardas.
The court refused to lift the interim stay on January 9, noting that the producer had already received multiple extensions over several years to settle the liability without full resolution.
The film, directed by Nalan Kumarasamy, features Karthi as a quirky cop who emulates the legendary MGR, a concept that had generated significant buzz before the legal stall.
While Studio Green attempted to argue for a release based on partial payments, the Division Bench upheld the prohibition on all theatrical, OTT, and satellite releases until the decree is settled in full.
This latest ruling effectively kills the trade’s prediction that the film would capitalize on the January 9 slot vacated by ‘Jana Nayagan’ .
