Tamil cinema has reached a new global milestone as ‘Tourist Family’ , starring Sasikumar and Simran, has been included in the Academy’s official list of 201 films eligible for Best Picture at the 98th Oscars.
Directed by debutant Abishan Jeevinth, the survival drama qualified alongside other Indian titles like Kantara: Chapter 1 and Tanvi The Great.
Sasikumar expressed his deep gratitude to fans and the Academy for the recognition, which highlights the film’s grounded, naturalistic portrayal of a Sri Lankan Tamil migrant’s struggle.
The film’s journey to the Oscars follows a highly successful critical run, including winning the Best Film award at the Chennai International Film Festival.
Veteran director Bala recently penned an emotional letter to Sasikumar, praising his “fighting spirit” and urging him to return to direction, a request that Sasikumar has vowed to fulfill soon.
As the industry awaits the final 10 nominations on January 22, the film continues to draw attention for its emotional resonance and social commentary on migration.
