Chennai witnessed a musical celebration of the upcoming film ‘Ramayana’ on Thursday, as A.R. Rahman took the stage to present compositions created for the ambitious adaptation of the Indian epic.

The event, held at the Chennai Trade Centre, brought together the film’s leading actors, filmmakers and musicians. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra, the project features music by Rahman in collaboration with internationally acclaimed composer Hans Zimmer.

The cast includes Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, Sai Pallavi, Rakul Preet Singh, Ravie Dubey and Sunny Deol.

The evening began with a children’s choir performing a Tamil version of ‘Jai Jai Ram’. Malhotra and Tiwari subsequently spoke about the challenges and aspirations involved in bringing the epic to the screen, emphasising its cultural importance and its ability to connect with audiences across generations.

Rahman joined singer Chinmayi Sripaada for a performance of ‘Jai Jai Ram’, adding a live musical dimension to the launch. Cast members, including Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, Yash, Rakul Preet Singh and Ravie Dubey, also spoke about their involvement in the production.

Another major attraction was ‘Ravana Tandav’, which was released on Dussehra. Yash, who plays Ravana, discussed the song’s connection to the character’s devotion to Lord Shiva and how it influenced his preparation for the role.

Rahman and his musicians went on to perform selections from the film’s score, including musical themes and background compositions. The programme also featured ‘Mangal Rang’ and ‘Jodi Jodi’, while Sachet Tandon made his first live appearance performing ‘Main Ram’.

Amazon Music, the film’s official music streaming partner, organised the event, which ended with the cast and creative team assembling on stage.

Speaking about the experience, Rahman highlighted the significance of creating music for a story deeply embedded in India’s cultural imagination. He also acknowledged the contributions of Malhotra, Tiwari, lyricist Kumar Vishwas, Zimmer and the wider musical team.

With its combination of Indian musical traditions and an international composing partnership, ‘Ramayana’ is positioning its soundtrack as a major part of the film’s cinematic experience.
