September is shaping up to be an interesting month for Tamil cinema, with films spanning action, horror, crime, drama, mystery and comedy lined up for theatrical release. From Karthi’s much-awaited ‘Sardar 2’ to Karthik Subbaraj’s ‘Dorothy’, several notable projects are set to arrive on the big screen this month.

Here’s a look at the Tamil releases currently scheduled for September.

‘Immortal’ – September 4

GV Prakash Kumar and Kayadu Lohar headline this horror thriller. The story follows a man whose seemingly ordinary stay at a young woman’s apartment takes an unsettling turn when strange incidents begin unfolding. What starts as a new beginning soon becomes a fight to escape a frightening situation. Mariyappan Chinna directs the film.

‘4 Idiots’ – September 4

Pugazh, Pragya Nayan and Ravi Mariya are part of this crime thriller directed by Sajo Sundhar Murugesan. The film follows four Chennai-based youngsters who turn to crime after their livelihoods are affected during the lockdown. Their plan to steal hidden money from a property, however, takes a dangerous turn when they discover that they have walked into a deadly trap.

‘Delivery Boy’ – September 4

Directed by Nani Darla, ‘Delivery Boy’ stars Leo Sivakumar and Radikaa Sarathkumar. The film centres on a young food delivery worker who dreams of becoming a police officer. When his critically ill mother needs urgent help, he finds himself pushed into a desperate decision involving stolen money. His situation becomes even more complicated when he discovers a connection between his actions and a man facing a wrongful murder accusation.

‘Paavai’ – September 4

Mullaiyarasi and Niranjana Neithiyar lead Rahul Vignesh’s ‘Paavai’. The drama follows a talented young woman whose ambitions are interrupted after she is married into a troubled household. The narrative traces her life from adolescence into adulthood as she struggles with the consequences of her circumstances and attempts to regain control over her future.

‘Mandaadi’ – September 10

Soori and Suhas star in Mathimaran Pugazhendhi’s ‘Mandaadi’, a rural drama built around a traditional boat race. The story revolves around two rival teams led by Kaali and Saattaappuli. Their competition during the traditional sailboat race forms the central conflict of the film.

‘Sardar 2’ – September 10

One of the month’s biggest releases, ‘Sardar 2’ brings Karthi back as the spy at the centre of the franchise. PS Mithran returns as director, with SJ Suryah also playing a key role.

The sequel takes the spy into another dangerous mission after a new international threat emerges. With powerful adversaries standing in his way, the protagonist faces a high-stakes operation where even a small mistake could have serious consequences.

‘Demonte Colony 3’ – September 10

Arulnithi and Priya Bhavani Shankar headline Ajay Gnanamuthu’s ‘Demonte Colony 3’.

The latest chapter revolves around an investigation into the disappearance of a librarian. As Srini and Debbie pursue the mystery, their search leads them into a disturbing world filled with hidden secrets and increasingly dangerous revelations.

‘Reunion’ – September 11

Directed by Satz Rex, ‘Reunion’ features Aruldoss and Anupama Kumar. The film follows a group of former school friends who come together after several years. Their reunion brings old conflicts, secrets and unresolved issues back into their lives, forcing them to confront events from their past.

‘BeeP’ – September 18

‘BeeP’ combines elements of mystery, suspense and fantasy. Raaghav and Prerna Khanna lead the film, which is directed by L. Shanmuga Sundar.

The story brings together a group of college youngsters chasing an unusual dream and a police officer investigating the death of a close friend. Their separate paths eventually converge, creating a mystery that plays with the line between reality and the fantastical.

‘Dorothy’ – September 25

Karthik Subbaraj’s ‘Dorothy’ is among the most anticipated Tamil releases towards the end of the month.

Rishikanth, Sananth and Keerthy Suresh star in the film. The story follows childhood friends Karthi and Subbu, whose lives undergo a major change after Dorothy enters their close-knit world. Her presence has a lasting impact on the two friends and alters the dynamics of their relationship.

‘Lenin Pandiyan’ – September 25

‘Lenin Pandiyan’ brings together Dharshan Ganeshan, Roja and Gangai Amaran, with DD Balachandran directing. The film deals with the fallout of illegal sand mining and its impact on farming communities. Farmers fighting to protect their livelihoods, a policeman facing punishment, members of the judiciary and a businessman with vested interests become part of a larger conflict.

‘Meesaya Murukku 2’ – September 25

Hiphop Tamizha Adhi returns with ‘Meesaya Murukku 2’, a continuation of his 2017 semi-autobiographical film. The sequel once again draws from Adhi’s musical journey, focusing on his efforts to build his own band and establish Hip-Hop Tamizha. Chaithra Achar, Ramya Ranganathan and Ketika Sharma are also part of the cast, while Adhi himself has directed the film.

With releases spread across the first, second and final weeks of September, Tamil cinema has a diverse theatrical lineup this month, giving audiences plenty of options across genres.
