Psycho

– Review

Mysskin is not a regular filmmaker. He is both- does things differently and does different things. His latest offering ‘Psycho’ is yet another example to prove the above.

Perhaps for the first time in Tamil cinema, this movie tries to empathise with its antagonist, a psychopath who mercilessly kills women and chops their bodies.

The story goes like this: Gautham (Udhayanidhi Stalin), a visually challenged musician, falls in love with Tagini (Aditi Rao Hydari), a radio jockey.

Though he conveys her his love, she sees him as yet another roadside Romeo and insults him. However, when she understands his true love for her and also realises that he is a differently-abled, she is touched.

She even gets ready to accept his proposal and asks him to come to a particular spot by dropping a hint in her radio show. When Gautham comes there, a psychopath kidnaps Tagini.

Angulimala, the psycho is already giving a tough time to the police department by kidnapping woman and brutally murdering them by chopping off their heads.

When Angulimala is about to kill Tagini, she challenges him that Gautham would sure come to rescue her. The rest is all about the game between Angulimala and Gautham.

Udhayanidhi Stalin presents a performance which is better than his previous films. But the two leading ladies, Aditi Rao as confident modern day woman and Nithya Menen as a physically challenged former cop, are terrific.

The real hero of the film is Ilayaraja’s music and the ‘Isaignani’ proves why he is maestro. Mysskin’s writing and making are terrific, especially in the first half.

For, the second half, especially the scenes that lead us towards the climax, lack the conviction we had seen in the earlier films of Mysskin. Also, there are many scenes which are full of bloodshed. But still, Psycho is a rare and different movie.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5
