– Review

Three young men are living as tenants in a house owned by K. Bhagyaraj. One of them brutally murders the other two before taking his own life. After this horrifying incident, no one is willing to rent the house. However, attracted by the low rent and fully aware of its dark history, the protagonist Ajay Karthik decides to move in.

Initially, Ajay lives in the house fearlessly, but within a few days he begins experiencing terrifying supernatural events that leave him shaken.

Meanwhile, Ajay violently attacks himself and dies, while the house owner, K. Bhagyaraj, also passes away. Police officer Natti arrives at the scene to investigate and take custody of the bodies. During the investigation, the supposedly dead Ajay suddenly regains consciousness, warns Natti about something mysterious, and then collapses again.

Ajay is immediately admitted to the hospital. Shocked by this bizarre incident, and by the fact that a complete stranger somehow knew his name, Natti intensifies his investigation. As he digs deeper, a series of shocking truths comes to light.

What are these hidden truths? What supernatural experiences did Ajay face? What is the real mystery behind the deaths of the three young men? The film ‘Dark’ unfolds these questions scene by scene in a gripping and chilling manner.

At a time when most Tamil horror films rely heavily on comedy, ‘Dark’ stands out as a genuine horror thriller. Packed with unsettling incidents and spine-chilling sequences, it keeps the audience tense and engaged from beginning to end.

Ajay Karthik delivers a convincing performance as the lead. Although his character knowingly moves into a haunted house with confidence, his gradual fear and psychological deterioration after witnessing supernatural events are portrayed with remarkable authenticity. He convincingly captures the transformation from a carefree young man to someone emotionally and mentally disturbed, making his performance one of the film’s biggest strengths.

Natti is equally impressive as the investigating police officer. He starts by treating the case as an ordinary criminal investigation, but as he uncovers the eerie truth behind the incidents, his performance gains depth and intensity.

The late K. Bhagyaraj, playing the house owner, adds significant weight to the film with his experienced acting and commanding screen presence, making every scene he appears in more impactful.

Although their roles are relatively brief, Anjana Nethran, VTV Ganesh, Indhumathi Manikandan, and Sibi Chakravarthy all contribute effectively to the narrative and leave a lasting impression.

Cinematographer Ravi Sakthi deserves special praise for creating an eerie atmosphere inside the haunted house. Instead of relying solely on darkness, he uses lighting creatively to suggest that something mysterious lurks within the shadows. His restrained use of light, combined with carefully chosen camera angles, builds suspense and heightens the audience’s sense of fear throughout the film. Music and other departments add strength.

Overall, ‘Dark’ is an engaging horror thriller that focuses on suspense, mystery, and supernatural terror rather than comedy. With strong performances, atmospheric cinematography, and an intriguing screenplay, it succeeds in delivering a genuinely chilling cinematic experience that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.
