A hero is only as good as his villain, and Tamil cinema has gifted audiences some truly memorable antagonists who, at times, overshadowed the protagonists. Let us take a look at some of the most memorable villains of Kollywood.

Neelambari (Padayappa):

Ramya Krishnan’s portrayal of Neelambari is one of the most iconic female villains in Tamil cinema. Her unyielding pride, obsessive love, and vengeful spirit made her a formidable opponent to Rajinikanth’s Padayappa. Neelambari’s magnetic presence and powerful performance ensured she was not just a villain but a character with her own complex motivations.

Antony (Basha):

Raghuvaran’s chilling performance as Mark Antony, the ruthless and psychologically disturbed gangster, provided the perfect foil to Rajinikanth’s ‘Basha’. His unique voice modulation, erratic behavior, and menacing screen presence created a villain who was both terrifying and utterly unforgettable.

Siddharth Abhimanyu (Thani Oruvan):

Arvind Swamy’s return to Tamil cinema as the suave, highly intelligent, and morally bankrupt Siddharth Abhimanyu was a revelation. His character, a brilliant scientist using his intellect for nefarious purposes, was a fresh take on villainy. Siddharth Abhimanyu’s sophisticated evil and philosophical debates with the hero made him one of the most compelling antagonists in recent memory.

Vedha (Vikram Vedha):

Vijay Sethupathi’s Vedha is a gangster with a philosophical bent, whose storytelling ability and grey morality challenge the upright police officer Vikram (Madhavan). Vedha’s complex character, which forces the audience to question notions of good and evil, made him a standout and contributed significantly to the film’s critical success.

Muthupandi (Ghilli):

Prakash Raj’s villainous turn as Muthupandi in Ghilli combined menace with a touch of comical obsession. His repetitive use of “Chellam” and his unwavering pursuit of the heroine made him a highly entertaining, albeit terrifying, antagonist who became ingrained in pop culture.
