Tamil cinema shines at National Film Awards with 10 honours; Vijay congratulates winners

Tamil cinema had a strong presence at the 72nd National Film Awards, securing 10 honours across various categories. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has congratulated the artists and technicians whose work earned recognition at the national level.

The awards recognised several notable Tamil productions and their creative teams. Dhanush’s ‘Raayan’ was named the Best Tamil Feature Film, while Dhanush also received a Special Mention for his performance in ‘Captain Miller’.

‘ Amaran’ emerged as another major winner from Tamil cinema. Director Rajkumar Periasamy received the Best Director award, while R Kalaivanan was recognised for editing and GV Prakash Kumar won the honour for Best Music Direction (Background Score).

The team of ‘Maharaja’ also featured among the Tamil winners, with stunt choreographer Anl Arasu receiving the award for Best Stunt Choreography and Sachana Namidass being recognised as Best Supporting Actress.

Other Tamil winners included Suren G, who received a Special Mention in audiography for ‘Meiyazhagan’, and T S Hariharasudhan, who won the Best Sound Design award for the short film ‘Blue’.

Vijay congratulated the winners through a statement issued by the Tamil Nadu Department of Information and Public Relations. He described the haul as a proud moment for Tamil cinema and acknowledged the contribution of filmmakers, performers and technicians.

The recognition came as part of the 72nd National Film Awards, which honoured achievements in Indian cinema for films certified during 2024. The awards were formally presented on September 22, 2026, at Ekta Nagar in Gujarat.

Director Rajkumar Periasamy and composer GV Prakash Kumar subsequently acknowledged the Chief Minister’s congratulatory message on social media.
