The divorce case between Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor C. Joseph Vijay and his wife, Sangeetha, has come to a close after she withdrew her petition before the Chengalpattu Family Court on Friday.
Sangeetha participated in the hearing through video conferencing and informed the court that she wished to discontinue the proceedings. After interacting with her and confirming that the decision was voluntary, the court permitted the withdrawal and disposed of the case.
The petition had been filed earlier this year, seeking dissolution of the couple’s marriage. In her plea, Sangeetha had alleged that Vijay had been involved in an extramarital relationship, claiming that the development had severely affected their marital life.
She had also stated that the alleged relationship caused her emotional distress and strained the family’s personal life. According to the petition, she felt neglected in the marriage and claimed the situation had also impacted their children.
The case attracted widespread public attention after it surfaced during the run-up to the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Hearings were adjourned on multiple occasions before Friday’s proceedings brought the matter to an end.
The matrimonial dispute had also figured in a separate legal challenge concerning Vijay’s election affidavit. A petition filed before the Madras High Court questioned financial disclosures made by the Chief Minister, including a loan reportedly extended to Sangeetha and funds disclosed in connection with a private educational trust.
The High Court, however, dismissed the plea after noting that an earlier petition seeking identical relief had already been rejected.
Vijay and Sangeetha have been married for more than two decades. They first met in the 1990s, registered their marriage in the United Kingdom and later celebrated their wedding in Chennai according to Hindu customs. They have two children. With the withdrawal of the petition, the family court has officially concluded the divorce proceedings.
