While Tamil film heroes are worshipped as demi-Gods by fans, there are a few south Indian flicks which explored the concept- What would happen if God comes down to earth?
This week, as part of its Friday special articles series, Mykollywood.com throws light on those interesting movies, which not just made the audience to laugh, but also to think.
KADAVUL
‘Kadavul’ is a 1997 film directed by Velu Prabhakaran. The movie features Velu Prabhakaran, Manivannan, Arun Pandiyan, Mansoor Ali Khan and Roja in lead roles.
The film, produced by H Anraaj, had musical score by Ilaiyaraaja and was released on 5 December 1997. Despite having controversial themes, the film was well received. The film was dubbed and released in Telugu as ‘Shakti’.
In January 2018, Velu Prabhakaran announced that he would be making a sequel to the film. The film has RR Tami Selvan, Swathy as the lead pair with Imman Annachi and veteran Seetha essaying crucial roles.
ARAI EN 305-IL KADAVUL
‘Arai Enn 305-il Kadavul’ is a 2008 film directed by Chimbu Deven, who earlier directed ‘Imsai Arasan 23-am Pulikecei’, starring Vadivelu. The film stars Prakash Raj, comedian Santhanam in his first film in the lead role, alongside Ganja Karuppu, Jyothirmayi, and Madhumitha in the lead roles.
An ensemble supporting cast including Sampath Raj, Madhan Bob, Rajesh, M S Bhaskar, Periyar Dasan, and Ilavarasu appears in supporting roles. The movie is produced by Shankar’s S Pictures. The music of the film was composed by Vidyasagar with cinematography by Soundarrajan and editing by Sasi Kumar.
The storyline of the film was that the whole universe is a computer simulation controlled by a supercomputer and God is the one who has access to it. Upon the film’s release on 18 April 2008, it received positive reviews, and the acting of Santhanam was praised by the critics.
OH MY KADAVULE
‘Oh My Kadavule’ is a 2020 film written and directed by Ashwath Marimuthu on his directorial debut. The film stars Ashok Selvan, Ritika Singh and Vani Bhojan in the lead roles.
Sha Ra and M S Bhaskar act in the supporting roles and Vijay Sethupathi and Ramesh Thilak gave a cameo appearance of Gods. The film had its theatrical release on 14 February 2020 coinciding Valentine’s Day.
Arjun (Ashok Selvan), Anu (Ritika Singh) and Mani (Sha Ra) are best friends since childhood. During a party to celebrate Arjun clearing his Engineering arrear exams, Anu suddenly asks Arjun to marry her, to which he agrees. One year later, Anu and Arjun are filing a mutual divorce in court. A man (Ramesh Thilak) sits behind Arjun and predicts that he won’t get his divorce on that day as his wife will faint and be rushed to hospital, then he provides him a visiting card and disappears.
To Arjun’s shock, all the events predicted by this strange man turn out true and the case is postponed to evening. Arjun rushes to the address mentioned on the visiting card. There, he encounters the man, who introduces himself as an assistant to God (Vijay Sethupathi). Arjun explains his problems to God.
GOPALA GOPALA
‘Gopala Gopala’ is a 2015 Telugu film directed by Kishore Kumar Pardasani. The film was jointly produced by Daggubati Suresh Babu and Sharrath Marar under the Suresh Productions and North Star Entertainment banners.
It features Venkatesh and Pawan Kalyan in the lead roles and Shriya Saran, Mithun Chakraborty and Posani Krishna Murali in supporting roles. Anoop Rubens composed the music while Jayanan Vincent was the film’s cinematographer.
The film is a remake of the 2012 Hindi film ‘OMG – Oh My God!’ which was itself based on the Gujarati stage play ‘Kanji Viruddh Kanji’ and on the 2001 film ‘The Man Who Sued God’.
It follows the story of an atheist, Gopala Rao, who sues God after losing his shop in an earthquake. Religious organisations revolt against him and Bhagavan Vishnu visits him as his human guide, under his incarnation Krishna.
