Director Mani Ratnam has recently apologized to fans for the disappointing performance of his latest film, ‘Thug Life’, which reunited him with actor Kamal Haasan after 37 years.

In a recent interview, Mani Ratnam said, “I apologize to those who were expecting another film like Nayagan. It is not our intention to do that kind of film again. We thought we would give a new experience. But the fans expected something else. It turned out to be a misunderstanding.”

He expressed regret for not being able to fulfill the hopes placed by the fans.

‘Thug Life’ reportedly grossed less than Rs 60 crore in two weeks, ending up as a box office letdown.

The film also faced a ban in Karnataka due to a controversial statement by Kamal Haasan regarding the origin of the Kannada language.

Streaming rights were acquired by Netflix. Due to its theatrical underperformance, the OTT release window might be preponed, with reports suggesting it could be available sooner than the initially planned 8-week window.
