Honest remake
Laal Singh Chaddha – Review
Aamir Khan recounts his life story to passengers on a train. He grows up bullied because of his leg braces, despite his protective mother Mona Singh, but he befriends a classmate, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and later pines for her.
Aamir soon becomes an athlete and joins the military. Kargil war, Indira Gandhi assassination and sectarian riots also figure in the plot.
Director Advait Chandan treats the story in an optimistic way and stays true to the Gumpian formula.
For the most part, director Advait Chandan’s Laal Singh Chaddha remains faithful to the original material. A big shoutout to Atul Kulkarni as the writer for Indianising the script instead of just making a remake.
Aamir Khan’s performance is a breathtaking balancing act between comedy and sadness.
He plays the character with just the right blend of sincerity and earnestness. Aamir Khan’s performance is elevated by Kareena’s performance.
Thank Kareena has delivered yet another endearing performance.
Rest of the cast including Naga Chaitanya as Balaraju and Mona Singh as Aamir Khan’s mother have all delivered a convincing performance.
A special mention about Ahmad Ibn Umar as Young Laal.
Music by Pritam is soulful and Satyajit Pande’s camerawork captures the emotions effectively.
