Kamal Haasan has expressed grief over the death of veteran actor Sowcar Janaki, who passed away at the age of 94 following hospitalisation.
Remembering their decades-long association, he highlighted the professional bond they shared across several films. Their collaboration began with ‘Parthal Pasi Theerum’ in 1962 and continued over many years.
Kamal recalled Janaki as an exceptional performer who had acted opposite several major stars of her generation. He also pointed to her close association with filmmaker K Balachander, who frequently chose her for important roles.
Janaki entered the film industry with the Telugu movie ‘Shavukaru’ in 1950. She later became a prominent presence in Tamil cinema, appearing in several notable Balachander films, including ‘Neerkumizhi’, ‘Edhir Neechal’, ‘Kaviya Thalaivi’ and ‘Thillu Mullu’.
Her final Tamil film appearance came with ‘Biskoth’ in 2022. In his tribute, Kamal remembered Janaki not only as an accomplished actor but also as a figure who had occupied a memorable maternal space in his own cinematic journey. He expressed his sadness at the passing of a performer whose career had spanned generations of South Indian cinema.
