Director Lokesh Kanagaraj recently revealed that the story behind Vijay’s identity in ‘Leo’, is not entirely true and is only the perspective of Mansoor Ali Khan. Lokesh also said that there was a dialogue which was cut from the movie to keep the audience guessing, and this dialogue was even unveiled recently.
This is not the first time that a fake narrative has been used in a movie. Let us take a look at some of the movies that had a fake backstory.
Vaalee (1999)
‘Vaalee’ featured Ajith in twin roles, and a minor portion of the film included one of the Ajith characters duping Simran with a fake love story. Director SJ Suryah gave full blown visuals through a song dedicated to this made-up character Sona. Despite the audience knowing that the flashback has no merit, a filmmaker selling it with all his might, and the viewers entertaining it was unique for Tamil cinema at that time.
Manmadhan (2004)
Starring Silambarasan aka STR in the lead role, ‘Manmadhan’ is a movie about twins a fake flashback. Silambarasan when caught for a series of murders reveals to everyone that it is his twin brother who is responsible for the same. The story is however only partially true and it turns out that the twin Silambarasan commits suicide after being cheated in a relationship, and accidentally killing his girlfriend and her lover. The flashback is revealed to be false only to the audience, while the characters in the movie still believe that the twin-Silambarasan is out there on a killing spree, while the present Silambarasan ‘avenges’ his brother’s death.
Pizza (2012)
The story is about a pizza delivery man played by Vijay Sethupathi who lands in a mysterious predicament, and how it affects his life. Vijay Sethupathi is a pizza delivery boy who lives with his girlfriend, Ramya Nambeesan, an aspiring novelist researching material for a horror story. Vijay Sethupathi does not believe in the supernatural but is afraid of anything paranormal. Ramya keeps telling him that he will soon realise the presence of supernatural beings. One night he gets caught in a haunted bungalow. It is later revealed that the entire story of the haunted bungalow was fake.
Isai (2015)
The story is about the tiff between Sathyaraj and S J Suryah, the two music composers in the film industry. Suddenly, Suryah wakes up, and it is revealed that the entire story was his dream. Nila (from ‘Anbe Aaruyire’) is now his wife, and she says that fans are eagerly awaiting for a movie as he has not made a movie in the last 10 years. Suryah says that he got a story from his dream and needs to decide the climax. The movie ends there.
