Packed with punch
Sarpatta Parambarai
– Review by Naveen
Sarpatta clan’s coach Rangan (Pasupathy) was an undisputed champion in the ring. Idiyappa Parambarai’s coach Duraikannu (GM Sundar) finds an undefeated protégé in Vembuli (John Kokken).
No one from the Sarpatta clan is able to defeat Vembuli despite best training from Rangan, who now becomes a ‘Vaathiyar’. Kabilan (Arya) is always interested in boxing, but his mother Bakkiyam (Anupama Kumar) does not like it.
Kabilan is very close to Kevin (John Vijay), who he lovingly calls Daddy. Kabilan crosses path with Rangan and enters the boxing ring to save Rangan’s image. What happens next forms the rest of the story.
Director Ranjith transports the audience to the 70s and has showcased the lifestyle during that time.
Though the story is nothing different from the usual underdog sports drama, it is the screenplay and the treatment of characters that leave an impact on the audience.
Arya’s hardwork and dedication do complete justice to the character. The rest of the cast including Pasupathi, Kalaiyarasan and John Vijay have all done their part well.
However, it is the women in the movie including Anupama Kumar who steal the show with their strong performances.
Santhosh Narayanan’s music adds life to every scene and makes the watching all the more interesting. Cinematography, editing and stunts department deserve kudos. Had only Ranjith reduced ‘Ranjithisms’ and focused on the story alone, the movie would have been far better.
