Comedy on friendship and fakes

“Mustafa Mustafa”

– Review

Karthik (Sathish), is a popular TV anchor who is on the verge of marrying his long-time lover, Steffy (Monica Chinnakotla).

His perfect life hits a massive roadblock when an embarrassing and compromising video of him leaks online and goes viral.

While Karthik insists the video is a “deepfake” or doctored, a series of white lies, misunderstandings, and the interference of his friends—Vasu (Suresh Ravi) and Chitti (Karunakaran)—only dig his grave deeper.

The film follows his frantic, hilarious, and often desperate attempts to prove his innocence and save his wedding.

Director Praveen Saravanan adopts a fast-paced, “hyper-link” comedy style. He successfully captures the absurdity of how the internet reacts to scandals, mocking everything from sensationalist news channels to judgmental keyboard warriors.

While the first half is a riot of situational comedy, the director takes a more serious turn in the climax, offering a surprising twist that recontextualizes the friendship between Karthik and Vasu.

Playing the lead, Karthik, Sathish moves away from his usual “sidekick” trope to deliver a performance that is both frantic and vulnerable. He perfectly portrays the plight of a man watching his life crumble in real-time.

As the loyal friend Vasu, Suresh Ravi is a revelation. He carries a “heroic” grace that balances Sathish’s high-energy panic, making him the anchor of the second half.

Monica is effective as the conflicted fiancée, while Maanasa adds a layer of mystery and glamour to the narrative.

Karunakaran and Pugazh handle the heavy lifting in the comedy department. Their banter provides the film’s biggest laughs, even when the plot gets heavy. Aishwarya Dutta and Pavel Navageethan add significant weight in their pivotal supporting roles.

Jones Rupert’s soundtrack is energetic, with the wedding celebration song ‘Sir Ah Paaru Thaaru Maaru’ (sung by Anthony Dasan) already being a favorite. The background score effectively heightens the tension during the film’s “thriller-esque” moments.

Cinematographer K.S. Vishnu Shri uses a vibrant, colorful palette for the wedding prep scenes, which contrasts sharply with the gritty, handheld camera work used when Karthik is being hounded by the media. Rest of the technical aspects gel well with the theme of the movie.
