Ambitious tale of human-animal bond

“Mr. Zookeeper”

– Review

Pugazh as Chinna Thambi, is a character initially portrayed with stereotypical traits often associated with intellectual disability, working in a carrot factory in the Nilgiris.

His life takes an unexpected turn when he mistakes a tiger cub for a kitten and brings it home as a pet.

The central conflict arises when the cub’s disappearance puts pressure on the forest department, leading Chinna Thambi and his wife to attempt to return it to the wild.

However, upon realizing the dangers the forest poses, they decide to raise the cub themselves, leading to a series of unforeseen challenges.

The film’s unique selling point is the use of a real tiger, intended as a central attraction.

Director J. Suresh, known for his earlier works like ‘Junior Senior’ and ‘Ennavale’, attempts to craft a soulful tribute to human-animal bonds.

However, the narrative suffers from inconsistencies, particularly in the portrayal of Chinna Thambi’s character.

Pugazh, making his debut in a lead role on the big screen, delivers a satisfactory performance, bringing intensity to his character

. Shirin Kanchwala plays his wife, and Singampuli, portraying a local familiar with the region, shines in the forest sequences, often taking digs at commercial exploitation of nature.

AGR’s music and Yuvan Shankar Raja’s background score elevate the tension. Rest of the technical aspects of the movie are passable.

Rating: 3.5/5
