The New Year is here and it sounds promising for Tamil cinema. For, Kollywood is going to witness mega releases in the months to come. Big films featuring top stars mean more footfalls to theatres and more revenues.
This week, as part of its Friday special articles series, Mykollywood.com lists out some of the big releases of 2020 and wishes the industry, artistes, technicians and its readers a very happy New Year.
DARBAR
“Darbar will bring back the stylish Rajini of the 1990s. It is not a political movie. I did not pen the story keeping in mind Rajini sir’s political entry,” says director A R Murugados, as the film is gearing up to hit the screens on January 9.
The cop story is produced by Allirajah Subaskaran under the banner of Lyca Productions. The film stars superstar Rajinikanth, Nayanthara, Nivetha Thomas, and Sunil Shetty.
The music for the film composed by Anirudh Ravichander while cinematography and editing are performed by Santhosh Sivan and Sreekar Prasad, respectively.
PATTAS
‘Pattas’ marks the reunion of Dhanush and director Durai Senthilkumar who had earlier teamed up for ‘Kodi’. The commercial entertainer has the National Award winning actor playing a dual role.
The movie is produced by Sathya Jyothi Films. The film features music composed by Vivek-Mervin. The film is scheduled to release on 16 January 2020.

‘Pattas’ will feature Dhanush in dual roles – father and son. The portion featuring Dhanush as the father will have actor Sneha as his partner, and Mehreen Pirzada will be seen as Dhanush’s partner for the son’s role.
MASTER
Vijay’s next film with director Lokesh Kanagaraj of ‘Maanagaram’ and ‘Kaithi’ fame has been titled ‘Master’. In a rare tweet, the actor himself shared the first look and title of the film.
‘Master’, in which Vijay is said to be playing a college professor, has an ensemble cast with established stars such as Vijay Sethupathi, Antony Varghese , Malavika Mohanan and Andrea among others playing key roles.
Music is by Anirudh Ravichander. The unique first look poster, featuring an intense Vijay, seems to pack some deep meaning that points to certain traits of Vijay’s character. Plans are on to release the movie for summer 2020.
VALIMAI
The shooting of Ajith’s highly-anticipated ‘Valimai’ had started in Hyderabad in recently. If media reports are anything to believe, Yuvan Shankar will be composing music for ‘Valimai’, which is being directed by H Vinoth.
Recentl, Ajith’s new look in ‘Valimai’ had caught the social media by storm. After ‘Nerkonda Paarvar’, Ajith has teamed up with director Vinoth and producer Boney Kapoor for ‘Valimai.
Soon after the release of his second film ‘Theeran Adhigaram Ondru’ (2017), Vinoth reportedly approached Ajith Kumar for a big budget film featuring a protagonist with negative shades to his character. However, the project was rejected by Ajith and asked the director to instead work on remaking the Hindi film ‘Pink’ (2016) as ‘Nerkonda Paarvai’ (2019) in Tamil.
During the making of ‘Nerkonda Paarvai’, producer Boney Kapoor announced that he would collaborate again with director Vinoth and actor Ajith Kumar for another Tamil film.
INDIAN 2
‘Indian 2’ is a vigilante action thriller film directed by S Shankar. A sequel to the 1996 film ‘Indian’, the film is being produced by Subaskaran Allirajah‘s Lyca Productions.
The film stars Kamal Haasan and Nedumudi Venu reprising their roles as Senapathy and Krishnaswamy respectively from the first instalment, with Kajal Aggarwal, Rakul Preet Singh and Priya Bhavani Shankar.
The film features music composed by Anirudh Ravichander, collaborating for the first time with Kamal Haasan and Shankar. Cinematography and editing are handled by R Rathnavelu and A Sreekar Prasad, respectively
COBRA
Vikram, whose film with director Ajay Gnanamuthu has been titled ‘Cobra’, will shoot for the movie in Europe and Russia. Meanwhile, the first look of the flick is expected to be released on the occasion of Pongal.
According to sources, the movie has been titled ‘Cobra’ because it resembles the character of the hero. Srinidhi Shetty, Indian Cricketer Irfan Pathan, KS Ravikumar and several others play key roles in the movie.
The film is produced by Lalit Kumar under the banner Seven Screen and the music is composed by Oscar-Grammy winner AR Rahman. If sources are to be believed, Vikram will sport more than 23 looks in ;Cobra’, which will be loaded with adrenaline-pumping action.
SOORARAI POTTRU
‘Soorarai Pottru’ is an action drama film directed by Sudha Kongara and produced by Suriya and Guneet Monga, under their respective banners 2D Entertainment and Sikhya Entertainment.
The film is based on events during the life of Air Deccan founder G R Gopinath. G V Prakash Kumar was selected to work on the film’s music, collaborating with director Sudha and actor Suriya for the first time. Niketh Bommireddy handles the film’s cinematography.
The title poster of the film was released on 13 April 2019. The first look poster was released on 10 November 2019. The film will be expected to release on April 2020.
