Tamil cinema in 2025 may not have seen a flood of women-centric films, but the year stood out for the variety, depth, and courage of stories driven by female protagonists.
Moving beyond token “strong female characters,” several filmmakers chose to place women’s emotions, choices, and agency at the narrative core, spanning genres such as social drama, coming-of-age, crime comedy, and intimate relationship studies.
Together, these films reflect an industry gradually opening space for women-led storytelling.
‘Gentlewoman’:
Directed by Joshua Sethuraman and released on 7 March 2025, Gentlewoman stars Lijomol Jose as Poorni, whose life unravels after her husband mysteriously disappears, revealing deeper emotional truths about marriage, betrayal, and self-worth. The film places a woman’s emotional journey at its core, interrogating societal expectations within intimate relationships.
‘Bad Girl’:
Bad Girl, written and directed by Varsha Bharath and released on 5 September 2025, broke barriers with its young female protagonist, Ramya (played by Anjali Sivaraman), navigating identity and rebellion in a world that often sidelines young women’s voices. Produced by Vetrimaaran and supported by Anurag Kashyap, the film received international attention — including a NETPAC Award at the Rotterdam Film Festival — suggesting that women-centric Tamil cinema can resonate beyond local markets.
‘Revolver Rita’:
Among the more talked-about titles of 2025 is Revolver Rita, a women-centric crime comedy featuring Keerthy Suresh in an unconventional lead, blending humor with action while breaking from traditional heroine tropes. Slated for 27 August 2025, the film spotlighted a bold female lead in a genre usually dominated by male stars.
‘Angammal’:
A drama film starring Geetha Kailasam as the title character — an older woman whose personal choice not to wear a sari blouse becomes a powerful, symbolic conflict with her family and community. The story explores autonomy, social expectation, and identity from a woman’s perspective, and anchors its narrative in Geetha’s deeply affecting performance. The film earned critical acclaim and festival awards, establishing it as one of the most genuinely female-focused films of the year.
‘Mrs & Mr’:
While not always highlighted for its feminist themes, this adult dramedy starring Vanitha Vijayakumar placed a woman front and center — exploring marital dynamics and gender roles through its narrative. Though poorly received by critics and audiences, it still featured a female lead and offered commentary on relationships.
‘Lockdown’:
Lockdown — starring Anupama Parameswaran — positions itself as a true-story-inspired drama about women’s psychological and emotional experiences during the pandemic lockdown. Though its original December 5 release was postponed, the project signaled a continued interest in narratives that explore the nuanced inner lives of women when faced with societal upheaval.
