Before the Throne: Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan’s early films – F’day Spl. Article by Naveen

Rumors are circulating about a potential collaboration between Superstar Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan in a film directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, which would mark a reunion of the two top actors after more than four decades.

Both actors shared screen space extensively in the early stages of their careers, from 1975 to 1979, and even made cameo appearances in later films.

Here’s a look at some of their iconic films together:

‘Apoorva Raagangal’:

This K. Balachander directorial is a milestone as it marks the debut of Rajinikanth in a supporting role while Kamal Haasan was the protagonist. The film is remembered for its complex storyline and is a classic in Tamil cinema.

Kamal Haasan played Prasanna, a young and rebellious man from a well-to-do family who falls in love with a woman twice his age. His character’s revolutionary ideas and complex emotional journey were a central part of the film’s narrative.

Rajinikanth made his cinematic debut in a powerful supporting role as Pandiyan. Though it was a short role, his entry scene and signature style of flipping a cigarette caught the audience’s attention and paved the way for his future image as a stylish anti-hero.

‘Moondru Mudichu’:

Another K. Balachander classic, this film features Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, and Sridevi. Rajinikanth plays an antagonist, and his character’s actions drive the film’s narrative.

Kamal Haasan played Balaji, a good-natured and naive young man who is unaware of the manipulative nature of his roommate. His character is a passive observer for much of the film’s central conflict.

This film was a turning point for Rajinikanth, who played the main antagonist, Prasath. His character’s villainy and cunning, particularly his iconic habit of flipping cigarettes, solidified his reputation as one of Tamil cinema’s best anti-heroes.

‘Avargal’:

This film is a dramatic love story where Kamal Haasan plays a ventriloquist who is a silent admirer of the female lead, while Rajinikanth portrays her abusive ex-husband.

Kamal Haasan plays a unique and endearing character. Janardhan is a ventriloquist who is in love with Anu (Sujatha), a woman who has been through a painful marriage.

In a stark contrast to Kamal Haasan’s character, Rajinikanth plays the main antagonist, Ramanathan, Anu’s abusive ex-husband. He is a cruel and sadistic man who mentally and physically tortures his wife.

’16 Vayathinile’:

A groundbreaking rural drama by Bharathiraja, this film showcased the versatility of both actors. Kamal Haasan’s portrayal of a simple villager and Rajinikanth’s iconic role as the villain “Parattai” are highly acclaimed.

Kamal Haasan played Chappani, a simple and innocent villager who is often bullied. His rustic and realistic portrayal of a bumpkin earned him immense critical acclaim and a reputation for versatility.

Rajinikanth was the villain, Parattai, a flamboyant and ruthless local ruffian. His performance was widely praised and his famous dialogue “Idhu eppadi irukku?” (How is this?) became one of his most popular catchphrases.

‘Ninaithale Inikkum’:

Directed by K. Balachander, this musical comedy-drama is about a band’s journey and features both actors in prominent roles with equal screen time.

Kamal Haasan’s role: He played Chandru, the lead singer and guitarist of a musical band. His character’s romantic and emotional journey with Jaya Prada’s character formed the core of this musical drama.

Rajinikanth’s role: He played Deepak, the guitarist of the same band. Rajinikanth’s character was known for his witty remarks and stylish, fun-loving personality, which was a contrast to Kamal Haasan’s more serious role. The film is a classic example of their balanced screen presence.

‘Ilamai Oonjal Aadukirathu’:

A love story with a twist, this film has Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth as friends caught in a love triangle.

Kamal Haasan plays Prabhu, a quiet and reserved man who works as the manager of an advertising agency owned by his friend, Murali (Rajinikanth). Prabhu is an orphan who was raised by Murali’s family, and he is devoted to his friend.

Rajinikanth plays Murali, the wealthy and carefree owner of the advertising agency. In contrast to Prabhu’s seriousness, Murali is jovial, extroverted, and has a great sense of humor. He is deeply fond of Prabhu and considers him a brother. The central conflict of the film arises when Murali falls in love with the same woman, Padma, unaware of Prabhu’s feelings.
