The struggle for justice
“Thandakaranyam”
– Review
Murugan (Kalaiyarasan), is a tribal man who, after losing his job as a forest guard, holds on to his lifelong aspiration of joining the Indian Army.
He is recruited into a special program, only to realize that he has been enrolled in a fraudulent operation designed for a larger, more sinister purpose.
The story skillfully weaves together Murugan’s personal journey with a larger social commentary, exploring themes of disillusionment and the clash between idealistic dreams and brutal reality.
While the first half is a taut and gripping exposé of the system, the second half loses some of its momentum, veering into more melodramatic territory.
Director Athiyan Athirai proves his prowess in crafting a compelling and socially relevant story.
The film’s strength lies in its meticulous attention to detail, particularly in its depiction of the training camp and the dynamics of power.
The raw, unflinching tone is commendable, and the screenplay is initially very effective at building suspense and empathy.
Kalaiyarasan delivers a standout performance as Murugan, portraying the character’s journey from hopeful aspirant to a disillusioned victim with remarkable nuance and emotional depth.
Dinesh also provides a strong and impactful performance, carrying the weight of his role with quiet strength.
The supporting cast, including Riythvika, Bala Saravanan, and Shabeer Kallarakkal, all contribute effectively to the narrative, with Bala Saravanan particularly impressing in a serious role.
Justin Prabhakaran’s score is a major highlight, serving as the emotional backbone of the film.
Pratheep Kaliraja’s cinematography captures the essence of the setting with picturesque visuals, creating an immersive backdrop for the story.
Rest of the technical aspects gel well with the theme of the movie.
