Mix of courtroom drama and sports action
“Angikaaram”
– Review
‘Angikaaram’ is an emotionally charged courtroom drama that follows the legal battle of an underprivileged athlete fighting against injustice and systemic discrimination.
KJR plays a talented athlete from a socially and economically marginalised background in Chennai. Raised by his mother, a sanitation worker, and supported by his younger sister, a law trainee, he sees athletics as the only path to lift his family out of poverty.
Just when he earns an opportunity to compete at the Commonwealth level, he becomes the target of a conspiracy fuelled by caste prejudice and abuse of power. Refusing to give up, he takes his fight to court in search of justice. Whether he succeeds forms the heart of the story.
Making his acting debut, KJR delivers a sincere performance, especially in the film’s emotional moments. While a few scenes feel slightly overacted, his commitment to the role is evident, and he shows promising potential for future projects. The supporting cast, including Viji Venkatesh, Rangaraj Pandey, Vasundhara, and Mansoor Ali Khan, play their parts effectively and add credibility to the narrative.
Ghibran’s music complements the film well, with memorable songs and a powerful background score that enhances the emotional weight of the story. Cinematographer Viswanath deserves special praise for his striking visuals, capturing everything from the athletic events to the courtroom sequences with impressive finesse.
Director Thenpathiyan presents a hard-hitting story about the struggles faced by talented individuals from oppressed communities in their pursuit of recognition. The film stays true to its social message without compromising its intent. Although the runtime could have been tighter and the courtroom drama sharper and more convincing in places, Angikaaram succeeds as a socially relevant and inspiring film that highlights the realities of discrimination while celebrating resilience and determination.
