Loyalty and survival

‘Alangu’

– Review

Set in the scenic highlands near the TN-Kerala border, Alangu explores the repercussions when a group of affluent men decide to eliminate the stray dogs in the area.

Their plans take an unexpected turn when they encounter a young worker who has just formed a deep bond with one of these dogs.

Director Sakthivel Perumalsamy has chosen an engaging storyline, bringing it to life with stunning visuals, a strong aesthetic sense, and a unique ability to make the surrounding landscape feel like a character in its own right.

What sets Alangu apart from typical films in its genre is its avoidance of melodrama and repetition. Instead, Perumalsamy effectively uses subtle symbolism to explore themes of violence and retribution. The presence of the dog is pivotal throughout, especially in scenes that juxtapose moments of chaos and tenderness.

D. Gunanidhi delivers a commendable performance, while Kaali Venkat, Chemban Vinod, and Appani Sarath all bring significant depth to their roles. Notably, Appani Sarath excels as a man consumed by rage and vengeance. Sreerekha also adds a compelling presence to the film.

Ajesh Ashok’s music enhances the overall experience, while Pandikumar’s cinematography and the crisp editing further elevate the film.

Rating: 3.75/5
