Anupama Parameswaran has spoken candidly about how a difficult past relationship affected her confidence, career and perception of herself.
In a recent interview with Dhanya Varma, Anupama described the relationship as controlling and said she was often made to feel guilty about her confidence, profession and even menstruation. She recalled that whenever she raised concerns with her partner, her emotions were allegedly dismissed as being caused by PMS or her menstrual cycle.
The actress said the repeated comments eventually affected the way she viewed herself. She recalled reaching a point where she felt embarrassed about being an actor, being confident and even about being a woman. Anupama also spoke about how the experience changed her views on motherhood. She said she had once imagined having a very large family and had even joked about wanting 11 children. However, she now does not see herself having children and connected the change to what she experienced in the relationship.
She further said that despite her professional achievements, the relationship left her feeling inadequate and influenced choices involving her appearance, work and personal life. She also discussed how the relationship affected her professional decisions. She alleged that she avoided promoting ‘Dragon’ because of her former partner. She also recalled an emotional experience during the promotions of ‘Paradha’, saying that alleged slut-shaming left her distressed.
Marriage was another area in which she said she experienced pressure. According to Anupama, she was repeatedly encouraged to get engaged and married but continued postponing the decision because she was uncomfortable moving forward.
Anupama has discussed the experience over two conversations on Dhanya Varma’s YouTube channel. She has not revealed the identity of the former partner. Her latest comments follow her return to social media in July after taking a break, following which she began speaking more openly about her personal experiences.
