Party symbols hold significant political capital. Even after all these years people still vote for Two leaves and Rising Sun symbol without even knowing who the actual candidate is.
The symbol is of so much importance that whenever there is a feud in the party, the first thing the fighting factions do is take stake of the party symbol.
This is why new parties try hard to ensure that they are alloted the same symbol so that they can be easily recognised by the voters.
This is also why Kamal Hassan led MNM is after the Torch Light symbol which was alloted to the party during the Lok Sabha election 2019. MNM had requested the ECI to allocate a common symbol for the party across constituencies to contest in the 2019 parliamentary elections.
After being alloted the Torch Light symbol Kamal Hassan said that the symbol is so appropriate that MNM wil endeavour to be the ‘Torch-Bearer’ for a new era in Tamilnadu and Indian politics.
MNM became one of the first parties to start their election campagin for the upcoming Assembly elections. The party has been carrying out their campaign by propagating the Torch Light symbol. However, the ECI recently alloted the Torch Light symbol to MGR Makkal Katchi.
If there is no torchlight, we will become light house. They are driving us to take Viswaroopam. You tell me when to take the Viswaroopam, we will take it immediately, Kamal Hassan said.
Following this he also launched a legal drive with the Election Commission of India to acquire the ‘torchlight’ symbol.
Days after the actor’s plea was moved to the Chief Election body, Kamal Haasan has got relief after MGR Makkal Katchi, to which the ‘torchlight symbol’ was allotted, had decided to give up the symbol and moved its petition for acquiring a symbol that is close to MGR.
Speaking to the media, MGR Makkal Katchi chief Viswanathan said that he has decided to give up the torchlight symbol and petitioned the Election Commission to provide the symbol that would be close to MGR.
As ‘Torchlight’ now goes to the pool of Election Commission of India, the reports say that Kamal’s Makkal Needhi Maiam would win the race and acquire the torchlight symbol ahead of the assembly polls.
Actor turned politician Kamal Haasan has got a huge relief from what has become a sudden political twist in Tamil Nadu ahead of the assembly polls as the political party which had obtained the ‘torchlight’ symbol has decided to give up the symbol, which would now be expected to go to the hands of Kamal Haasan.
