Even as the decision by the makers of Jyothika’s ‘Ponmagal Vandhaal’ to release the film on OTT platform due to the ongoing lockdown triggered huge opposition from theatre owners, there was a buzz that Vijay’s ‘Master’ too would go the same way.

However, makers of the movie have clarified that they did not have any such plan and the film would hit cinema halls first before it was released on digital platform. The much awaited flick was supposed to hit the screens on April 9, but could not do so due to coronavirus lockdown.

Meanwhile, a section of producers have come to the support of ‘Ponmagal Vandhaal’ makers. Actor-filmmaker Cheran tweeted: “Good move by @2D_ENTPVTLTD .. I appreciate and support.. Bcoz it will create a new path for small budget films.. But this way is not suitable for big budget films.. So theatre owners no need to worry in this issue.”

Alleging that the move to release films on OTT would hit their livelihood, theatre owners have threatened to boycott films of all those related to ‘Ponmagal Vandhaal’. This means they would not screen films starring Jyothika, Suriya and Karthi. Producers like SR Prabhu and J Satish Kumar too have extended their support to Suriya’s production house 2D Entertainment, which has bankrolled ‘Pongal Vandhaal’.
