Actor-politician Vijay has taken a firm stand on women’s safety in Tamil Nadu, urging Governor RN Ravi to implement measures ensuring their protection in light of a recent sexual assault incident involving a woman student at a technical university.

Vijay, founder of the Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), submitted a memorandum during his meeting with the Governor at Raj Bhavan on Monday.

BJP state president K Annamalai lauded Vijay’s initiative, describing it as a necessary step in addressing the state’s law and order concerns.

The TVK memorandum emphasised the need to “protect law and order” and safeguard women across the state. “In our memorandum, we sought steps to protect law and order in Tamil Nadu, besides action for ensuring safety of women in all places,” said N Anand, TVK general secretary, who accompanied Vijay during the meeting.

The party also pressed for the release of Rs 2,000 crore in central funds for Cyclone Fengal relief, claiming affected individuals are still awaiting support.

Vijay expressed his anguish over the issue through a heartfelt handwritten letter addressed to “dear sisters”, shared via TVK’s Instagram account. In the letter, Vijay voiced frustration with governance, writing, “It is known that it is pointless in asking those who govern us, no matter how many times we ask them. That’s what this letter is for.”

He described witnessing women’s daily struggles with “mass atrocities, disorderly conduct, and sexual crimes” as deeply painful. Reassuring women, he wrote, “Don’t worry about anything but concentrate on your studies. We will create a safe Tamil Nadu. We will together ensure it soon.”

Meanwhile, TVK cadres who attempted to distribute copies of Vijay’s letter to the public in Chennai were detained.
