Veteran producer K. Rajan passes away

The Tamil film industry is in deep shock following the tragic and sudden demise of veteran producer, director, and distributor K. Rajan, who passed away today, May 17, 2026, at the age of 85.
According to initial reports, the veteran filmmaker traveled by car from Washermanpet, stopped near the Adyar bridge in Chennai under the pretext of taking a walk, and tragically jumped into the Adyar River.
Fire and rescue personnel recovered his body shortly after, and local police have registered a case to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Rajan was a pillar of Kollywood for over four decades, having entered the industry in 1983 with the film Brammacharigal under his banner, Ganesh Cine Arts.
Beyond production, he stepped behind the camera to direct films like Unarchigal, took on supporting acting roles in movies such as Paambu Sattai and Thunivu, and served as the president of the Chennai Film Distributors Association in 2000.
In recent years, he became a household name for his fiery, uncompromising, and blunt speeches at media events and audio launches.
He was a fierce champion for small-budget filmmakers, consistently using his voice to criticize skyrocketing star remunerations and high production costs, leaving behind a legacy of unapologetic advocacy for the financial health of the Tamil film trade.
