Following Jyothika-starrer ‘Ponmagal Vandhaal’, Keerthy Suresh’s ‘Penguin’ is taking the OTT route this week to reach the audience. Direct release on digital platforms is emerging a trend in Tamil cinema and it is only expected to grow in the days to come.
This week, as part of its Friday Special Articles series, Mykollywood.com takes a look at Tamil movies that decided to stream on OTT instead of hitting the conventional theatres.
R K NAGAR
‘RK Nagar’ is a political satire film, written and directed by Saravana Rajan. The film features Vaibhav, Inigo Prabhakaran and Sana Althaf, Anjena Kirti in the lead roles, while Sampath Raj plays a supporting role.
The movie has music composed by Premgi Amaren, The director of the film Saravana Rajan has clarified that the film is not political, but according to the teaser, it shows multitudes of political scenarios which took place in Tamil Nadu during the period of 2015–2017. ‘RK Nagar’ which aimed to have a theatrical release was released on Netflix.
SILA SAMYANGALIL
‘Sila Samayangalil’ is written and directed by Priyadarshan. Produced by Isari Ganesh, Prabhu Deva and A L Vijay, the film features Prakash Raj, Sriya Reddy and Ashok Selvan. The music was composed by Ilaiyaraaja and the cinematographer was Sameer Thahir.
The film was released on Netflix. It was among the top ten shortlisted films for the 74th Golden Globe Awards, but was not nominated. Seven strangers waiting for their HIV results share their stories about how they suspect they have HIV. The film takes a twist when they know that one of them is suspected to have a positive result.
RADIOPETTI
‘Radiopetti’ is directed by Hari Viswanath, starring Ramanujam TVV and Lakshmanan Koratur in lead roles.
It became the first Tamil film to win the KNN Audience Award in the official competition in Busan International Film Festival 2015, and was an official selection in Indian Panorama for 46th International Film Festival of India held at Panaji, Goa.
‘Radiopetti’ is the story of a 70-year-old man, partially deaf and is extremely fond of the valve radio, a gift by his dad when he was a child and he sees his dad through the radio.
SETHUM AAYIRAM PON
‘Sethum Ayiram Pon’ is directed by Anand Ravichandran in his directorial debut. The film stars Srilekha Rajendran, Nivedhithaa Sathish, and Avinash Raghudevan in the lead roles. The film was released through online streaming services.
The film revolves around the relationship between Krishnaveni (Srilekha Rajendran), an oppari singer, and her 23-year-old granddaughter, Meera a.k.a Kunjamma (Nivedhithaa Sathish), who is a make-up artiste, after a period of separation.
SIVAPURANAM
‘Sivapuranam’ is a film that concentrates on the life of just one character, played by Rajesh Balachandran. The movie is directed by Arun Karthick. The story gyrates around a recluse young man Siva.
ANDAVA KAANOM
‘Andava Kaanom’ is an upcoming comedy film produced by JSK film Corp. directed by C. Velmathi in her directorial debut and stars Sriya Reddy in the lead role.
The film revolves around a women named Shanti and the problems that arrive when she loses her beloved utensil named Anda.
VAA DEAL
‘Vaa Deal’ is an upcoming action filmproduced by JSK film Corp. directed and written by Rathina Shiva. It features Arun Vijay and Karthika Nair in the lead roles.
The film has music by Thaman. Having been in production since 2012, the film has been delayed for several years. The film will finally release directly on OTT.
MUMMY SAVE ME
It is a supernatural horror film starring Priyanka Upendra, written and directed by Lohith H. The film is produced by K Ravikumar under KRK Productions and distributed by Horizon Studio.
It is an emotional horror film which revolves around a seven months pregnant mother Priya (Priyanka Upendra) and her six-year-old daughter Kriya (Yuvina Parthavi).
