Madras High Court on Tuesday dismissed a writ petition filed by actor Suriya seeking waiver of interest for the income tax assessment done for two years 2007-08 and 2008-09.
In 2011, the Income Tax (IT) department had assessed the income tax that is to be paid by the actor for two financial years – 2007-08 and 2008-09 – and directed him to pay Rs 3.11 crore.
Challenging it, the actor had filed a petition before the income tax appellate tribunal. The tribunal inturn had directed the actor to pay the amount estimated by the IT department.
As the tribunal had taken three years to deliver judgement, the actor had moved the High Court in 2018 seeking exemption from the waiver of interest for the income tax assessment. Justice SM Subramaniam who heard the case on Tuesday, dismissed the case after hearing the IT department’s argument.
