The second installment of ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ which was released recently and crossed the 300 crore mark worldwide and is still going strong in theatres. The film has got a good reception and the performances of the actors, especially that of Vikram and Aishwarya Rai are being praised by the fans. What makes ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ special is that the movie is based on the novel of the same name written by Kalki. Let us take a look at some of the novels that were adapted as movies in Tamil cinema.

Starring Soori in the lead role, ‘Viduthalai’ is based on the novel ‘Thunaivan’ authored by Jeya Mohan. The film has been made in two parts. While the first part received a huge response, fans are eagerly awaiting the release of the second installment. Vijay Sethupathi plays an important role in the movie. The second part is expected to be released by the end of 2023.

Vetri Maaran teamed up with Dhanush after the success of ‘Vada Chennai’ for ‘Asuran’. The movie is based on the book ‘Vekkai’ written by Poomani. Dhanush bagged the National Award for Best Actor for this movie. ‘Asuran’ also became the first movie in Dhanush’s career to reach the Rs 100 crore benchmark in box office. The actor played a character with dual shade who was on the run to save his family.


Inspired by the life story of Air Deccan founder G R Gopinath, the movie is the adaptation of the book “Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey”. The film was directed by Sudha Kongara and has Suriya playing the lead role. The film was released in OTT and received a massive response. The movie went on to bag five National Awards.
‘Aalavandhan’ is one of the most talked about films of Kamal Haasan. The movie is based on ‘Dhayam’ which was also written by Kamal Haasan. The movie was directed by Krissna. Though the movie opened to mixed reviews, it was a profitable venture. Kamal Haasan played dual roles in the movie.
Written and directed by Mahendran, the Rajinikanth starrer is based on Uma Chandran’s novel of the same name which was serialised in the magazine Kalki in 1966. ‘Mullum Malarum’ tells the story of Kali (Rajinikanth), a winch operator of a cable trolley who dotes on his sister Valli (Shoba) since they were orphaned, and clashes with his boss Kumaran (Sarath Babu).
