2008 ஆம் ஆண்டில் இந்திய அரசாங்கத்தின் MHRD ஆல் அங்கீகரிக்கப்பட்ட பல்கலைக்கழகமாக அறிவிக்கப்பட்ட VISTAS, சென்னையில் 100 ஏக்கர் பரப்பளவில் மூன்று வளாகங்களைக் கொண்ட தமிழ்நாட்டின் பல்துறைப் பல்கலைக்கழகம் என்ற தனிச்சிறப்பைப் பெற்றுள்ளது. மருத்துவம், நர்சிங், பொறியியல் மற்றும் தொழில்நுட்பம், வேளாண்மை, கடல்சார் ஆய்வுகள், சட்டம், கலை மற்றும் அறிவியல் போன்ற பல்வேறு துறைகளில் UG முதல் Ph.D வரையிலான திட்டங்களை வழங்குகிறது . இந்த ஆண்டு பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் மேலும் ஒரு சாதனையாக மத்திய அரசின் பல்கலைக்கழக மானியக் குழுவால் NAAC A++ தரச்சான்று வழங்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது.
