Bold subject, convincing screenplay

‘Saareeram’

– Review

The core plot revolves around two college-going lovers, Udhayan (Tharsan Priyan) and Meera (Charmy Vijayalakshmi), whose intense relationship faces severe opposition from Meera’s conservative family.
The family’s hostility escalates to the point of attempting to murder Udhayan to separate the couple permanently.
Fearing for their lives and determined to stay together, the lovers flee their village.
The central, and arguably most daring, point of the story is the extraordinary decision they take to ensure their survival and union.
The rest of the film chronicles the fallout of this decision: their struggle to adapt to their new reality, the continued pursuit by the family, and the final, inevitable conflict that determines their fate. .
Director G V Perumal, who also wrote the story, screenplay, and dialogues, deserves credit for conceiving a conceptually unique core for a romantic drama.
By introducing a serious, thought-provoking element into the familiar ‘eloping lovers’ trope, he aims to elevate the story beyond typical melodramas.
Tharsan Priyan as the hero Udhayan is given a complex arc, requiring him to shift between an ordinary lover and someone capable of extreme decisions.
He delivers adequately in scenes requiring emotion and action, and his portrayal of the courage to change one’s physical form is impactful in specific moments.
Charmy Vijayalakshmi as Meera offers a grounded and realistic performance in an emotional role. Her simple look and solid acting anchor the film’s core romantic conflict.
The supporting cast, including Shakeela (as a Doctor), Boys Rajan, and the antagonists J. Manoj and Puthupepettai Suresh, perform their roles competently, fulfilling the requirements of their respective villainous or supporting arcs.
Director G V Perumal also appears in a role as an Inspector. Cinematography by Dornala Bhaskar and Bharani Kumar captures the scenes passably.
Music by V.T. Bharathi Raja has provided commercial appeal in the songs while the background score supports the narrative where necessary. Rest of the technical aspects have complimented the movie well.
