A soulful melody of love and silence

“Mylanji”

Movie Review

The story centers on Surya (Sriram Karthick), a National Geographic photographer who navigates life with a rare speech disorder.
He travels to the serene hills of Ooty to capture a rare bird but finds himself captivated by Charu (Krisha Kurup), a spirited orphan who is being forced into a marriage she doesn’t want.
In a poignant twist, Charu asks for Surya’s help to reunite her with her former lover, Kathir.
As Surya selflessly assists her, Charu begins to realize that true love isn’t found in loud promises, but in the quiet, steadfast presence of the man standing right beside her.
Director Ajayan Bala delivers a “slow-burn” narrative that prioritizes atmosphere and emotion over plot twists. His direction is deeply nostalgic, reminiscent of the sensitive dramas of the 80s and 90s.
He successfully utilizes the “silence” of the protagonist to heighten the film’s emotional impact, making every gesture and glance feel significant.
While some might find the pacing a bit relaxed, the director’s focus on the purity of the characters’ intentions creates a sincere, heart-tugging experience.
Sriram delivers a subtle and deeply moving performance.
Tasked with playing a character with a speech disorder, he relies entirely on his eyes and body language to convey a whirlpool of emotions—sacrifice, longing, and hidden joy.
As Charu, Krisha is a breath of fresh air. She effectively portrays the transition from a confused girl seeking an escape to a woman discovering the true meaning of companionship.
Music by Ilaiyarajaa is the film’s second soul. His background score and melodies are vintage Ilaiyaraaja—soulful, haunting, and perfectly attuned to the misty landscapes of Ooty. The music fills the void of the protagonist’s silence beautifully.
Chezhiyan captures the “Lovedale” hill station with a painterly touch. The visuals of fog-covered peaks, quiet brooks, and the vibrant greenery are breathtaking, making the forest feel like a silent character in the romance. Rest of the technical aspects of the movie are good as well.
